How to Reduce an Image Below 100 KB or 200 KB
Meet a byte limit with measured examples, quality and dimension trade-offs, and checks for forms that also require minimum dimensions.
Start with the exact limit
Use the target-size tool and choose 100 KB or 200 KB. These presets mean 100,000 and 200,000 bytes, which also fit under portals that interpret KB as 1,024 bytes. Read the portal’s format and minimum-dimension rules before reducing anything.
The tool searches for a JPG or WebP result under the limit. It first changes encoder quality; if that is insufficient, it reduces dimensions. A failure message means it did not find a result within its bounded search, not that every possible compressor would fail.
- Open Compress to 100 KB and choose an image.
- Select the 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB preset and an accepted output format.
- Compress, then compare the original and result dimensions and file sizes.
- Open the downloaded file at actual size and check that important details remain legible.
Quality and dimensions are different constraints
A form may reject a 90 KB image that is too narrow. If the result is below the portal’s minimum dimensions, do not submit it; use a larger byte limit if permitted, crop unnecessary surroundings first, or start from a less detailed image.
PNG does not have a Canvas quality slider equivalent to JPG. This target tool converts PNG input to JPG or WebP. JPG loses transparency; WebP can retain it. This is not lossless compression.
If the original already fits and its format matches, the tool returns it unchanged. That also preserves its original metadata. Use Remove Image Metadata if you need a separate re-encoding step.
