When JPG to PNG is the right move
Convert JPG to PNG when you need a lossless working file, when you plan to edit the image further without stacking JPEG artifacts, or when a tool in your pipeline only exports cleanly from PNG. PNG will not restore detail that JPEG already discarded—once fine texture is gone, no container can invent it back. What you gain is a stable pixel grid that does not lose more quality on every save.
Designers sometimes convert a photo to PNG before cutting out a subject or adding a transparent background in another editor. The PNG itself does not create transparency from a JPG (the photo still has an opaque rectangle), but it is a better intermediate for editors that expect lossless input.
File size expectations
A PNG made from a photograph is usually much larger than the original JPG. That is normal: lossless compression cannot match JPEG’s aggressive discard of detail. If your goal is a smaller upload, stay on JPG or switch to WebP instead. Use JPG→PNG when correctness and editability matter more than bytes.
- Good for: editing pipelines, print prep, archiving a frame without further JPEG loss.
- Poor for: email attachments and strict upload caps—compress or use WebP instead.
A worked example and help
For a transparent graphic, choose PNG or WebP to retain transparency. JPG fills transparent areas with your selected color. In our generated graphic example, WebP at quality 80 was 8,442 bytes versus the 38,173-byte PNG source; your result can differ.

- PNG to JPGConvert PNG images to JPG in your browser. Choose a background color for transparent pixels because JPG has no alpha channel. Quality is adjustable; 80% is a solid default.
- JPG to WebPConvert JPG images to WebP in your browser. WebP is often smaller at a similar visual quality. Encoding uses your browser; if it cannot encode WebP you will see an error instead of an upload.
- Image CompressorReduce file size in your browser. Set a percent of the original, aim for 100 KB or 200 KB, or compress JPG, PNG, and WebP.
- Image ResizerResize images to exact pixel dimensions without uploading them.
